Nutritional Lecture and Seminar Information For Dog Clubs

If your club is inquiring about having a Seminar or Lecture, this information will be helpful in the planning process. I have provided a biography and estimated cost of a seminar at the bottom of this page. If you have any questions please contact me: email me

Holistic Nutrition; An Approach to Wellness and Longevity

LECTURE FORMAT: 4 hours (with 2 breaks and question and answer session).

The pet food recalls of March 2007 has greatly impacted consumers and the pet food industry alike. New consumer awareness and demand for accountability will bring the long needed changes, necessary in the current pet food industry. Although great strides have been made in animal nutrition in the past 10 years, we are now on the horizon of even better nutritional options for our companion animals. For years pet owners either fed table scraps or a dry kibble - period. Today, there are so many options available to consumers they get lost in a sea of information and choices. Here is where I can help.

In this lecture we will focus on nutritional needs, how to make good nutritional decisions for your pet, ones that fit your finances and lifestyle without compromising your pet's health. We will debunking internet myths, resolve the struggle between raw vs kibble, and discuss the current health challenges; cancer, vaccines, allergies, systemic yeast, giardia etc.

The general format of this lecture focuses on holistic nutrition and how it affects wellness and longevity, and how we can reverse many conditions with nutritional support. There will be ample time for questions and interaction with the audience - this is where we all learn.

Lectures - work well on Saturday afternoon or evenings.

SEMINAR FORMAT: 8 hours (2 breaks and 1 hour lunch)

Part 1- In the morning we will focus on nutritional needs, how to make good nutritional decisions for your pet, ones that fit your finances and lifestyle without compromising your pet's health. We will debunking internet myths, resolve the struggle between raw vs kibble, and discuss the current health challenges; cancer, vaccines, allergies, systemic yeast, giardia etc.

After lunch we will reconvene for the second segment of this seminar.

Part 2 - This segment will be a 3-4 hour power point presentation on Orthopedic Disease (all ages/stages and breeds). We will discuss the role of nutrition vs genetics, and how a comprehensive diet can actually reverse and correct many orthopedic conditions such as HOD, OCD, Pano, Arthritis, HD and Wobblers.

These power point presentations are visually compelling with before and after photos, and they provide a common sense approach to feeding your pets with a comprehensive program. This includes the explanation of the Blackwatch Feed Programs and why they work.

Seminars - these work well on Saturdays - 9 - 4, but it is possible to divide this seminar into two segments - Friday evening for Part 1- then Saturday Morning or afternoon for Part 2.

This is an example of a time line:

9:00 - 12:00 - (10:30 - break 15 minutes)

12:00 - 1:00 - Lunch (most clubs do a "pitch in" and it works well because it breaks the ice for further discussion in the afternoon.)

1:00 - 4:00 - (2:30 break (club provides a protein snack (nuts/cheese tray) because people start to lose energy as we approach to 2:30)

Seminar Scheduling Options To Consider:

Example 1 - We have scheduled an all day seminar on Saturday, I will come in on Thursday evening to regroup (I am a lousy traveler) then on Friday I have time to meet participants, breeders, see kennels. Saturday 9 - 4 is the Seminar, I depart on Sunday.

Example 2 - We have scheduled a Seminar - I come in on Thursday evening. Friday lunch with a sponsors, Friday evening Part 1 of the Seminar. Saturday 1:00 is Part 2 of the seminar, after we have dinner with some/all participants, Sunday I depart.

Speaking Fee:

Honorarium - for Lecture $750

Honorarium - for Seminar $1000

Other Fees:

    Driving Fee - Maximum 5-6 hours time - round trip - $100 - OR

Air Fare - estimated $500 (this can vary from $300 - $700 depending on area of country) I will be cost conscious, when I find the flight that I want to reserve, I will contact you to make the reservation for me or you can send a check ASAP for the reservations upon proof of cost from me.

Hotel - estimated $60 - $100 per day for hotel - this varies depending on area of country. I come in a day ahead of schedule to regroup.

It is my preference to stay at a hotel/motel - Hampton Inn, Comfort Inns, Baymont Inns etc. are good mid range options.

Make suggestions for your area, I will check into them then let you know where to make the reservations.

    IMPORTANT DETAILS:

If I am driving, I will need a very clear map - preferably directions from a man, sorry ladies - but I have been through this too many times!!

If I am flying, I will need someone to transport me, luggage and equipment to and from hotel, airport, place of lecture. Relax, I am not demanding, although after doing the K9 College Cruise 2007, Joe did change my nick name from "Princess" to "Empress".

Oh, and do me a favor....if it's an SUV that we are traveling in...make sure it has running boards or a small foot stool handy, I am short, ample and have a low center of gravity.

Payment:

Once a date is determined for the presentation and we are in agreement of fees, I will send a conformation letter to your club.

The club or sponsor pays for the air fare at the time of reservation, As soon as I know cost of the flight, I will contact the club for the cost of the fare to be mailed to me ASAP. Remember, getting a ticket 3 months in advance saves the club a considerable cost.

The club is responsible for the cost of the hotel room fee, before I depart. I will be responsible for my own meals, any room service or phone bills. I realize most clubs are limited on resources, so I keep that in mind when making arrangements for stay and travel.

My fee payment is due in the form of a check or money order at the end of the lecture/seminar - this includes honorarium and travel fee (if I drive).

Educational Information:

I will send a packet of educational material a head of time for the club to copy and have at lecture/seminar for participants. This includes a basic feed program, couple of short resource articles. An estimated cost to xerox will be under a dollar per packet. I try to keep the cost to a minimum. Members often volunteer
to donate for this copying or do it at home for the club.

Other club expenses to consider:

    Facility:

Although some clubs find places for free or little rental because it is for "educational" purposes (i.e. library, VFW halls, Moose Lodge or Elks, churches, community halls etc.) Keep in mind some people may want to bring animals (special cases) to get some input regarding their problems and/or you might want to have a place with a kitchen for making snacks/lunch for all day seminars.

AN AIR CONDITIONED ROOM FOR THE LECTURES/SEMINARS IS A REQUIREMENT!

Advertising and/or mailings for club members

    Equipment:

      • PROJECTOR FOR A POWER POINT PRESENTATION
      • Screen
      • Microphone
      • A table and chair for speaker, for my lap top and educational packets.
      • Tables and chairs for participants
      • Beverages available for participants to purchase
      • I will bring my own lap top.

Lunch/Breaks

If this is the first time you have offered a seminar for your club you may have some questions regarding breaks and lunches. Many clubs offer beverages and rolls/muffins in AM before we start, then have a "pitch- in" lunch for the participants, and protein snacks (cheese tray/nuts) for the afternoon break, as well as beverages and ice available all day.

Some times they charge participants to cover costs and other times the club or members take care of the costs.

Seminars are intense, so we have 15 minute break in the AM , then lunch at 12:00 - 1:00 with a second break at 2:30.

Breaks: 10:30 AM and 2:30 - I have found that we will need some kind of protein snack for the 2:30 break (nuts/cheese & crackers/fruit etc) because the participants start to fade and nod off about this time. It is important to stay alert after this part due to the interaction and sharing after the seminar is over. This is where we all learn!!

Typically the questions and answers go on until 4:00+ often there is a group that goes out to dinner after and we can relax and discuss dog topics.

    Recouping Your Clubs Costs:

Here is an example of fees to charge participants, if the club is picking up the total tab. Remember for seminars, many clubs go in with other breed, all breed clubs or training clubs to cover costs.

    25 people @ $25 = $625
    25 people @ $35 = $875
    25 people @ $45 = $1125
    35 people @ $35 = $1225
    45 people @ $25 = $1,125
    45 people @ $35 = $1,575
    50 people @ $35 = $1750

There is no limit to the number of people allowed to attend this seminar be it 2 people or 2,000 it is up to the club. Most people are willing to pay $35 - $50 for an all day seminar and $20 - $30 for a lecture - especially if there is are handouts and a lunch.

If your club does not have many resources consider getting sponsors from your community to contribute be it - beverages and snacks for the breaks or actually money for your program itself. One dog club that I worked with held dog treat bake sales to raise their funds.
